Just as a web contains many intricately woven strands of the same material that makes up the whole, many passages in the Old Testament have intricately woven truths within the construct of the whole! There are many layers of truth that can be extracted from Genesis 21, but each layer is connected. Law and grace, flesh and Spirit, old and new, Jew and Gentile; all aspects found within this passage but all falling under the same principle found in Scripture: The firstborn is rejected and the second born accepted. So in this account, we dissect the story of Abraham and Sarah receiving the fulfillment of the promise, the casting out of Ishmael and Hagar, and the forgiveness and compassion of God given to those who formerly mocked Isaac, and were "cast out" of the Kingdom.
